How to Care for Your Septic System
A well-maintained septic system can last for decades. The good news is that basic upkeep isn't complicated. Here's what we tell every customer we work with:
▶︎ Pump your tank on a regular schedule Most residential tanks need pumping every 2 to 4 years depending on household size and usage. Waiting too long leads to buildup, backups, and repairs that cost far more than a routine service visit. When we come out, we clean your effluent filter as part of every pump-out, something not every company includes.
▶︎ Know what not to flush Your septic system is not a trash can. Avoid putting grease, wipes, paper towels, coffee grounds, harsh chemicals, and cat litter down your drains. These don't break down the way waste does and can clog your system fast.
▶︎ Protect your drainfield Don't park vehicles on it, don't plant trees near it, and keep roof drainage and sump pumps directed away from it. A healthy drainfield is what keeps your system working the way it should.
▶︎ Get it inspected before you buy or sell If you're in the middle of a real estate transaction in La Plata or Archuleta County, a Transfer of Title inspection is required. Don't wait until closing week. Schedule it early so there are no surprises.
