Why CHOOSE Durango Septic
We built this Service.
We take it personally.
At Durango Septic, we locate septic tanks, distribution boxes, and leach fields using a camera and radio transmitter system. The camera goes into your line, the transmitter sends a signal, and we pinpoint the exact location from the surface. We also offer line scoping as part of the locating process which is useful, not just for finding components, but for diagnosing blockages, root intrusion, or line damage while we're at it. If you're buying a property, scheduling a Transfer of Title inspection, or just trying to get organized before your next service, locating is the right place to start.
“Durango Septic is a pleasure to work with. They answer their phone, fit me into their schedule with short notice, was very communicative, and arrived on time. They also answered all my questions while they were performing the work. Thank you.”

SIGNS YOU NEED TANK LOCATING
If you've ever stood in your yard and genuinely had no idea where your septic system is, you're not alone. Older properties are especially prone to this. Lids get paved over, landscaping changes, records get lost, and the person who knew where everything was sold the house twenty years ago. Even on newer properties, markers disappear and memories fade. The point is, not knowing where your system is doesn't have to slow things down. That's exactly what we're here to figure out.
You're new to the property and have no records of the system's location
Your previous pump-out company marked it but the markers are gone
You're planning landscaping, construction, or excavation near the yard
A Transfer of Title or continued use inspection is coming up
Your pump-out company needs access and can't find the lid
You're troubleshooting a slow drain or backup and need to assess the line

FAQ's
-
We run a camera through your cleanout or access point and use a radio transmitter attached to the camera head. From the surface, we can track the signal and pinpoint exactly where the tank and distribution box are sitting. It's accurate, non-invasive, and a lot faster than digging
-
Yes. We can trace the line from the distribution box out toward the leach field. This is particularly useful if you're planning construction, trying to avoid the field during landscaping, or troubleshooting a failing drain field.
-
They go together but serve different purposes. Locating tells you where your components are. Scoping lets us see the condition of the line itself — cracks, root intrusion, blockages, or damage. We often recommend doing both at the same time since the equipment is already in the line.
-
Locating costs depend on how straightforward the job is. A system with a known access point and a clean line to run the camera through is faster and simpler than one with no records, multiple possible entry points, or lines that haven't been touched in years. We price locating based on the time and complexity involved. Call us with the details of your property and we'll give you an honest estimate before you commit to anything.
-
The easiest way is to call someone with the right equipment. A camera and radio transmitter system is by far the most accurate and least invasive method — no random digging, no probing the yard with a metal rod hoping to hit something. If you want to do some preliminary detective work on your own, start with your property records or the county health department, which may have a system drawing on file. The sewer cleanout on the exterior of your house is another starting point. Your septic line runs from there toward the tank. But for accurate, confirmed results, professional locating with a camera is the right call.
-
Not practically, no. AirTags work by emitting a Bluetooth signal that nearby Apple devices pick up and relay. They're designed for surface-level tracking of items you might misplace, not for locating something buried several feet underground. Soil depth kills the signal. Even if someone had placed a tracker near a tank lid at some point, there's no reliable way to detect it once it's buried. The technology that actually works for this is a camera with a radio transmitter, which is exactly what we use. It's purpose-built for underground locating and gives us a precise position without guesswork.
